A major scientific discovery in the realm of paleontological history was made long before any official scientific team ventured into the fossil beds of the American West. In the fall of 1838, a number of farm labourers found themselves digging into the soggy soil in a quarry situated in the suburban area of Haddonfield, New Jersey. These farm labourers had been digging up what is known as marl, a fertile kind of mud that was greatly used by nineteenth-century farmers for fertilising depleted crop lands.As the workers drove their heavy iron shovels deep into the muck, they struck a massive, petrified layer that felt far too dense to be ordinary stone. Digging deeper into the pit, they began pulling up colossal, dark bones that looked completely alien compared to any modern animal they had ever seen.Instead of sharing the strange find with the newspapers in their local area, they kept the colossal fossils for themselves and even allowed visitors to take samples home as memorabilia pieces. After two decades had passed, a dedicated naturalist by the name of William Parker Foulke got wind of the legendary pit behind the property owner’s house. He arranged an excavation, and what he discovered in the dirt was a spectacularly beautiful beast that would go on to transform the entire scientific world – Hadrosaurus foulkii.
Constructing skeletons from fragmented bonesThe fascinating discovery served to be a pivotal turning point for early Earth scientists since it offered them an unprecedented amount of detail to work with when creating a full reconstruction of the beast. As mentioned in the historical document titled The Story of New Jersey’s State Fossil: Hadrosaurus foulkii, located in the archives at Rutgers University Geology Museum, this particular skeleton from Haddonfield was the first mostly complete one ever unearthed in North America.Before this pristine skeleton emerged from the marl pit, early palaeontologists had to base all of their theories on isolated teeth, shattered jaw fragments, or single random ribs discovered by chance across Europe.Due to the astonishing degree of completeness of the skeleton found in New Jersey, it became possible for anatomists to move from mere speculation to accurate reconstruction of the true posture of these giants of the prehistoric world. As explained in the They Once Roamed Here article by the National Park Service, the findings proved once and for all that these animals were not just huge and clumsy lizards that dragged themselves along the ground on four limbs in the same way crocodiles do today. Instead, with the help of the extraordinarily long hind legs and the relatively short front limbs, the animal had developed into an advanced bipedal creature resembling a bird that could stand and walk on its two feet.

Once the large animal, Hadrosaurus foulkii, perished along the shore, its body quickly sank to the depths of the ocean, where it remained encased in finely layered, anaerobic marine sediments that ensured the preservation of the fossils from scavengers and natural decomposition for many more years to come.Today, the fossil of the duck-billed dinosaur is proudly recognised as New Jersey's state fossil, thus providing a striking illustration of the fact that we live on a layer covering amazing worlds hidden right underneath our feet. Incredibly enough, the story teaches us the valuable lesson that not all groundbreaking discoveries of historical significance require one to travel far into the wilderness. It sometimes suffices to simply spend an ordinary day digging in your backyard and discovering something extraordinary.Indeed, it’s quite humbling to think about the fact that, when the present-day inhabitants of the area were engaged in constructing peaceful neighbourhoods and highway networks in New Jersey for countless years, there existed an almost perfectly preserved giant from the prehistoric era, right below the surface.
